"The Starship Enterprise 1701-D has been destroyed, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard finds himself without a command. While waiting for his new ship, Captain Picard has gone with Lieutenant Worf on a delicate diplomatic mission to the Cardassian Empire." "As Picard conducts high-level negotiations for the return of Federation prisoners of war, the Starship Enterprise 1701-E is being constructed under the supervision of Captain Morgan Bateson, a veteran of the twenty-third century who spent nearly ninety years in a pocket universe. In defiance of Starfleet Command, he will take Starfleet's newest, strongest starship and strike at the of the newly aggressive Klingon Empire." "Captain Picard's negotiations proceed smoothly - until he discovers that a hate-crazed Klingon commander - Captain Bateson's archenemy from ninety years ago - has taken the Enterprise from Bateson and launched a vicious attack on Cardassia Prime. To save the ship and preserve intergalactic peace, Picard must ally himself with his former Cardassian torturer, rely on the legendary skills of one Montgomery Scott, and draw new strength and inspiration from the memory of James T. Kirk."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved… (más)

A really fun story that takes place between the movies Generations and First Contact. It was a lot of fun to follow the story of Captain Bateson after the episode "Cause and Effect" of TNG. Carey makes the characters and crew of the Bozeman every bit as interesting as the TNG characters. ( )

What a mess. Some interesting ideas, but it reads like Carey just typed away a bit at a time until she was done, and nobody edited it or checked it for clarity, typos, redundancy, internal consistency, plausible science, or even fitness for the TNG characters.

She even changed the name of a ship once - I was all 'ok, so the Klingons got the name of the (NN) wrong, when do we find out what other information from their agent is wrong?' Answer, never, because that's just a mistake not caught by the proofreader. Assuming there was a proofreader.

If Carey is resting on her laurels she should retire. ( )

This story takes place just after Star Trek Generations ends and just before Star Trek First Contact begins. It tells the tale of Morgan Bateson and the starship Bozeman and what happened after they the crew of the Enterprise D helmed by Jean Luc Picard came out of a temporal causality loop. Diane Carey does a splendid job of fleshing out the characters their motivations and flaws. While not a major contribution to the Star Trek Universe, the story is woth reading for the story itself. Star Trek novel; influenced by Forester's Hornblower story of the same title; entertaining, but unmoving; continues story of Capt Bateson & the U.S.S Bozeman from the Typhon Time Rift

A fine Star Trek - The Next Generation novel by Diane Carey, one of the better and more prolific Trek writers, with a bit of crossover into classic Star Trek added to the mix. This one involves an inadvertent leap forward 93 years by a ship's crew from Kirk's time into Picard's time, and the attempt to thwart an impending invasion by the newly warlike Klingons. Carey has an admirable grasp of character, continuity and humor, and there is a particularly intriguing interchange between Picard and Kirk - sort of. The only flaw is a somewhat ambiguous and implausible resolution. ( )
