Sometimes you have to play love by ear. Love Lessons, Book 2. Aaron Seavers is a pathetic mess, and he knows it. He lives in terror of incurring his father's wrath and disappointing his mother, and he can't stop dithering about where to go to collegeâ??with fall term only weeks away. Ditched by a friend at a miserable summer farewell party, all he can do is get drunk in the laundry room and regret he was ever born. Until a geeky-cute classmate lifts his spirits, leaving him confident of two things: his sexual orientation, and where he's headed to school. Giles Mulder can't wait to get the hell out of Oak Grove, Minnesota, and off to college, where he plans to play his violin and figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. But when Aaron appears on campus, memories of hometown hazing threaten what he'd hoped would be his haven. As the semester wears on, their attraction crescendos from double-cautious to a rich, swelling chord. But if more than one set of controlling parents have their way, the music of their love could come to a shattering end. Warning: Contains showmances, bad parenting, Walter Lucas, and a cappella.… (más)

The first book, Love Lessons, and this one are fairly tightly woven together by the end of Fever Pitch. It will mean the most if you read them in order. I've read a lot of gay romance now, and I've learned more about how to write 'show don't tell' and deliver data to the reader without a plot-stopping data dump. Cullinan isn't perfect with the former, but she EXCELS at the latter. There are some powerful messages dished out by characters that are absolutely specific to those characters, and absolutely propel the plot. Well done. Impressive. I'm happy this one kicks off my reviews for 2017.

I bought the next two in this series, immediately upon finishing this one. Yay Christmas money. :) ( )

Some parts in the middle dragged a bit with pacing and characters being uncommunicatively silly for slightly longer than I had patience for. The action at the climax, while probably in the realm of "this could realistically happen," seemed off to me based on the tone of the rest of the book. It also seemed a weak way to resolve the conflict when Cullinan is usually so deft at conflict resolution. However, the high points of the story and characters were glorious, and I cried at least twice. Walter gives Randy a run for his money as my favorite Cullinan character. I'm really excited to read the third book in the series, which includes characters from this book who desperately need their Happily Ever After. ( )

I greatly enjoy this author's writing, and the first book in this series is one of my favorites. In some ways, I identify with this second story in the series even more, as the college setting is a just slightly fictionalized version of my alma mater. Reading about the college music scene was like returning to my youth.

As much as I enjoyed a male/male romance set in such a positive, familiar setting, the relationship, characters and plot were very enticing but not quite as enchanting as the first book. For example, I found the summer hook-up followed by the pursuit to the same college to be nicely different but also a bit of a constructed feel. Overall, as much as I enjoyed this, it's not quite the five star entry for me as the first book is. Still, fans of the author, or of sometimes awkward, often strewn with difficulties, but always heart-felt college romance should be nicely entertained. ( )

What a wonderful book! Finding yourself as a college student is as important as passing tests and writing essays. Cullinan's love of music shines through this tale of two teens who have to fight through the detrimental expectations of others to become who they really are. ( )
