This third and final volume in the exciting ‘Fire’ trilogy is as cataclysmic as I expected, yet it is also the touching story of the missing third blood-brother, Eoin, and the man he knows he is bonded to, Trystyn. But bonding is not as easy as it sounds, because they both have amber Fire, and there are dire predictions about what happens if two ambers ever bond. The end of times, as Eoin keeps calling it, may be upon them, and while all is definitely not as it seems, this provided a great setting for the adventure, excitement, and action that follow. A truly wonderful conclusion to the series!

Eoin is an interesting character. His blood-brothers Kian and Darach have long believed he died when he found his Fire, a risk all carriers of amber Fire face, but what really happened was far more amazing. Eoin ends up as the Guardian, a role he doesn’t want at all, and has to fight the evil council members without giving away the fact he knows what they are up to. Nothing good, that much is certain! And even though Eoin isn’t sure he can do it, he knows he has to try to stand up to the super-villain who is behind the threats to the entire world’s survival.

Trystyn is a victim of the council’s machinations and almost dies from what they do to him. Also a carrier of amber fire, and a Cariad like his brother Ceithin, Trystyn is the one who encourages Eoin to think about the very foundation of the Cariad versus City conflict, the role of the council, and helps Eoin come up with a solution. Trystyn also has some choice comments for the theory of amber Fires never being supposed to bond, and when he and Eoin put these ideas to the test, all kinds of interesting magik happens!

If you like speculative fiction with evil villains, power struggles between worlds, and old political hierarchies being questioned, if a man who thinks he can never bond with the one he is meant for learning differently seems like interesting characters, and if you’re looking for a read that features a magnificent final battle against evil and some touching moments between men who never expected to find love, then you will probably enjoy final book of he trilogy. I think it was worth waiting for.
