I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Princess Dinah is preparing to be queen and rule their kingdom alongside her father. Her coronation will be on her eighteenth birthday or so she had hoped. Not only is her father plotting against her, but his aide Cheshire as well (this Cheshire isn’t a cat).

This is a great story that draws you into another world. There’s a slight romantic interest, but nothing comes of it so this is definitely not a romance novel. The characters were so well described that you immediately connect with them. This is a great take on Wonderland’s Queen of Hearts; could we be reading a possibility of how she became evil?

Colleen Oakes has begun an amazing dark fantasy series with Queen of Hearts, one I’m sure everyone will enjoy! I can’t wait to find out what happens in book two.

I didn't know if I would enjoy this or not. While I generally do like retellings this one was iffy from the beginning. It was surprisingly delightful. It held my interest throughout and I am very eager to read more. (

I finally finished this YA book. Not any genre I’d normally read, I read this only because it was part of a book challenge I’m doing this year. BUT I liked it! It’s a very good origin story about a royal heroine—and would be a successful story within any genre. I even liked the fantastical elements such as a well-done make-believe animal/character near the end. This appears to be the first in a trilogy. I will keep reading... (

Similar to Gregory Maguire's creative retelling of children's stories, Colleen Oakes has given us an interesting and imaginative back story for the Queen of Hearts. Just giving the reader enough information to draw them in and leave them wanting more, Oakes weaves a tale of abuse and neglect with the hint and promise of romance to come. I will anxiously await the second book in this new and exciting series. (
