George Henry Alexander is a huge fan of baseball. His favorite team is the New York Yankees and his favorite player is Babe Ruth. George plays baseball during his free time and he listens to the games on the radio with his dad. Everywhere he goes, he carries his Babe Ruth baseball card. On his birthday, George's parents surprise him with two tickets to watch the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees--his first real game! But his presents don't stop there. Uncle Alvin has sent him a baseball jersey and cap, but it's for the Boston Red Sox! Filled with horror, George tosses them aside, but his mother will not have any of that. He will wear them to the baseball game with his dad! What will happen at the game? Will George get to meet Babe Ruth while wearing the opposing team's jersey?… (más)

I received a copy of Zachary Pullen's "The Bambino and Me" compliments of LibraryThing's Early Reviewer program and appreciated the opportunity. This is a fantastic picture book that shares the story of young George, growing up in the 1920's, who is passionate about baseball and dreams of becoming a big hitter like his idol, Babe Ruth. An unlikely chain of events leads to his getting to experience a big league game and Babe Ruth's talents and kindness. The artwork is fabulous and there is a memorable take home message for all kids young and old to enjoy. I am excited to pass this book on to my nephews to enjoy. ( )

This was difficult to review. The ISBN is mixed up with a Stephen King title. Talk about two different books that couldn't be more different!

Bambino and Me is the story of a young child's meeting with the Great Bambino, Babe Ruth. Told well through the eyes of a child, a enjoyed the tale of a young boy's journey to becoming a Babe Ruth fan. The illustrations by Zachary Pullen are enjoyable to kids, but not my cup of tea. It's the whole 'big head' phenomena in illustration which I can't stand, but kids seem to love. On a whole, a well done book. ( )

This nostalgic bit of fiction about a boy who meets his hero had my baseball-loving kids excited at the right moments, horrified at the right moments, and left them a bit nostalgic themselves for a world they'll never know. The art and text work well together.

I received a free copy of The Bambino and Me through Librarything's Early Reviewers program.

This reminds me of baseball's version of the hockey sweater -- a young Babe Ruth and Yankees fan is ecstatic to have a chance to watch his idol play... until he finds out that he has to wear the cap and jersey of the rival team, the Red Sox.

The artwork is gorgeous, the main character is engaging, and I love the 1920s slang.

And, of course, there's a good message in here about not judging a person based on their appearance (or, in this case, which jersey they wear).

This is a wonderful picture book. I know a baseball fan (and Leafs fan, which is pretty cool given who the author is) who I'll be buying a copy for his birthday. ( )

What I really liked about this book was that it was not told in that irritating "adult to child" voice that my kids dislike. It was told more in the voice of a grandfather reminiscing. The illustrations were great, adding to the feeling of nostalgia. The book did lead to some interesting dinner conversations about baseball, and - a promise to take the kids to see the Mariners. I only wish baseball today were the same as baseball yesteryear! ( )
