David Garnett's novel, the true story of his great-grandmother, is a prime example. (It also is a splendid choice to read with someone you care about, for it is an unusual example of love and devotion.) Clementina Carey's childhood included adventures with gypsies. As a young woman she walked from Forfanshire to Portsmouth (look at the map!) to find her husband after the battle of Trafalgar. This at a time when women did not travel alone, especially on foot. In later years she was to meet the elite of London, France, and Germany (and able to hold her own!) The final day of her life, alone and ill (her son and the doctor had planned to hospitalize her), she set off to go fishing, and died, resting against a rock, beside the coastline of her childhood.
