"Cavendon Hall is home to two families, the aristocratic Inghams and the Swanns who serve them, just as their ancestors did over the centuries. Charles Ingham, the sixth Earl of Mowbray, lives there with his wife Felicity and their six children: Guy, the heir, who is studying at Cambridge; their younger son Miles, attending Eton; and their four daughters Diedre, Daphne, DeLacy and Dulcie, affectionately called the Four Dees by the staff. Walter Swann, the premier male of the Swann family, is valet to the earl. His wife Alice, a clever seamstress, who is in charge of the countess's wardrobe, also makes clothes for the four daughters. For centuries, these two families have lived side-by-side, beneath the backdrop of the imposing Yorkshire manor. But now, with World War I looming, these two families will find themselves tested in ways they never thought possible. Loyalties are tested and betrayals are set into motion. In this time of uncertainty, one thing is sure: these two families will never be the same again. Set over a period of sixteen years (from 1913 to 1929), Cavendon Hall is Barbara Taylor Bradford at her very best. "--… (más)

I just finished reading, "Cavendon Hall" by Barbara Taylor Bradford. This is the first in the Cavendon series. What a truly delightful read! Ms. Bradford did an amazing job of developing her characters, plot and setting! The novel follows the Ingham and Swann families through Edwardian England. The Inghams are the aristocratic family while the Swanns are the family that has served them and kept their secrets over the past 160 years.
I've started reading the next book in the series, "The Cavendon Women", and I'm looking forward to seeing how the lives of these characters continue to develop! ( )

I loved it! If you enjoyed the Emma Harte saga you will like this one. Can't wait to read the next one in this series. ( )

I received a very enthusiastic mail from the publisher -of course- promoting Cavendon Hall and its sequels to me even though it is far from my usual read. They said it would be like Downton Abbey and I've really appreciated that show so I wanted to give it a try.

Set in the second decade of the Twentieth century it focuses on the Inghams, a noble family with a bunch of daughters, and the Swans, their more than loyal servants. This all seems very similar of DA and so far so good.

The thing is, I can see this book wants to be DA but fails to do so. Yes the elements are there, but I never felt it. The Earl and his children do encounter problems but they are solved with such ease, that they feel hardly like problems. I would like to discuss one example in more detail, see the following spoiler:

When Daphne was raped, I thought: 'Aha, this book is about the consequences of this event and the terrible things they have to do to make sure no-one learns about it. But no, not only do people immediately guess what happened and come up with the Grand Continental Tour thing, as by magic an eligible and very caring husband arrives who doesn't only understand Daphne and doesn't blame her for the rape (in those days I think this is quite some thing) also, he doesn't have a single problem with taking in the child as if it were his own. No problem at all.

It is much the same for other problems encountered. Also, an Oedipus complex if I've ever saw one.

Truth is, I've the rest in the series as well, so I'll read it some time, but for now I need a break.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! ( )

Predictable historic novel along the lines of Downton Abbey. Easy summer read. ( )

I truly wanted to love this book. Alas, the characters were too perfect and their relationships even more so. The setting was lovely, but I couldn't develop a strong enough relationship to anyone to pursue the series. ( )
