If Eugene O'Neill represents the tragic mask of American drama, then George S. Kaufman can easily lay claim to its stimiling counterpart. No other comic dramatist in America has enjoyed more popular success and perennial influence - or been more fortunate in his choice of collaborators, including George and Ira Gershwin, Moss Hart, Edna Ferber, and the Marx Brothers. Here, in the most comprehensive collection of his plays ever assembled, are nine classics: his uproarious "backstage" play The Royal Family (1927, written with Edna Ferber); the Marx Brothers-inspired mayhem of Animal Crackers (1928, with Morrie Ryskind), in a version discovered in Groucho Marx's papers and published here for the first time; June Moon (1929, with Ring Lardner), a hilarious look at a young composer trying to make it big on Tin Pan Alley; Once in a LIfetime (1930, with Moss Hart), one of the first and best satires of Hollywood; Pulitzer Prize winners Of Thee I sing (1931, with Morrie Ryskind and Ira Gershwin) and You Can't Take It With You (1936, with Moss Hart); Dinner at Eight (1932, with Edna Ferber), a tart ensemble piece that mixes comedy and melodrama: Stage Door (1936, with Edna Ferber), his much-loved story about young actresses trying to make it big in New York City; and The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939, with Moss Hart), an unforgettable burlesque of America's cult of celebrity. Bursting with vernacular wit, farcical ingenuity, and theatrical panache, these plays have remained perennial favorites and exuberant reminders of Broadway in its glory days. -- From dust jacket.… (más)

In this LOA edition, 9 comedic plays are introduced here. Some in conjunction with Edna Ferber & some in conjunction with Moss Hart. Some are well known like Animal Crackers while others are lesser known like Stage Door. All of these were presented on Broadway. This volume includes George Kaufman's chronology, notes on the texts & index. ( )

Some of the better known plays of George S. Kaufman, including some that are still performed today, such as You Can't Take it With You. It's a bit of a mixed bag, with some of the plays being a bit weak in the backbone, but the best of them make up for it. Even the lesser plays are worth reading, if only to see the history of theatre in mid-20th century United States. Most of these plays are not hilariously funny, at least on today's terms, but they have enough solid chuckles to deliver when they are supposed to. The pathos is also present, though sometimes a bit melodramatic for modern tastes. All in all, a good collection. ( )

been in love with the irascible (from all reports) kaufman since i was an adolescent and discovered the Algonquin Round Table. for impressions of kaufman read moss hart's ACT ONE or listen to (or watch) Elaine Stritch's one woman show AT LIBERTY. for the craft as practiced by the man himself ... read these plays. or better yet .. go to one (they are produced still, all over the world and with frequent broadway revivals). or watch one of the movie treatments.

'the royal family', 'animal crackers', 'june moon' [broadway archives video has recorded a 1970s public television version of this that is priceless], 'once in a lifetime' [recently staged at london's national theatre], 'of thee i sing', 'dinner at eight' [sigh], 'stage door' [more sprawling than the classic screen version .. but check in on kate hepburn and ginger rogers and eve arden and lucille ball and ann miller having fun with this set up as originally crafted by kaufman and edna ferber]; and the perhaps most familiar 'you can't take it with you' and 'the man who came to dinner'.

savor. enjoy. volumes like this one justify this entire 'library of america' series for me.
