Strangely, much of this period, hardly anyone remembers these plays & none of these had the force of his previous work such as "The Crucible." Still, it is a curious blend of religious & morality or so it seemed. Sad to say, these perhaps are still played on stage but only if is found in a thrift store. Fortunately, the volume includes 50 page selections of notes & essays on these plays that have been previously unpublished. ( ) A collection of plays from the middle period of Miller's career. Many of these deal with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, evidently on his mind heavily at that time. The first play in the collection, After the Fall, is believed to be about his life with Marilyn Monroe, though the author notes deny this. If not, he probably should have written the woman a lot less like Marilyn; methinks he doth protest too much. Overall, the plays are a good read, and it's a shame they are not more frequently performed. The American Clock, dealing with the Great Depression, has echoes in it of more recent years, and The Price, which deals with estranged brothers, can probably also feel somewhat relevant. A good collection; the author's notes at the end can add interest by letting you know what Miller was thinking. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

This volume--the second on The Library of America's definitive edition of the works of Arthur Miller--offers an unprecedented look at the extraordinary middle phase of an essential American dramatist. Here are fourteen plays, from Broadway hits to previously unpublished rarities, that trace Miller's evolving genius as he experimented with new forms and themes. Included are After the Fall, a tour de force exploration of guilt, responsibility, and history that shocked the public with its apparent depiction of Miller's life with Marilyn Monroe; Incident at Vichy, a devastating one-act dramatizing the roundup of Jews in Vichy, France; The Price, an intimate drama about two brothers and their inheritance, Miller's biggest commercial success since Death of a Salesman; The Archbishop's Ceiling, a tense and intricately plotted exploration of creativity and the Cold War; Playing for Time, a groundbreaking teleplay based on the story of the Women's Orchestra of Auschwitz; and many more.
