This story didn't turn out the way I had expected. I thought the boy would get scared of the monsters, but instead he was just irritated by their singing voices! It was actually kind of humorous. I think this book could be used for a unit on folktales, especially those with a trickster element to them.

A delightful, vibrantly illustrated trickster story based on English and French Antilles folklore, and not too scary to share with younger children. ( )

Personal Response- I thought this book was OK but it did have a multicultural aspect which is important. I like that Spanish words were repeated throughout the story. I do prefer Ashley's other book Puppets to this one because it probably wouldn't be a book you read many times. I did like the vivid illustrations however in that very bright colors were used.

Curricular Connections-- Use some Spanish words found within the story, talk about what fear is and what fears kids have. Are fears universal? ( )
