Once lovers before the hero discovered her identity of the daughter of the man who slaughtered his lover, the hero’s emotions were stripped , leaving him completely void of any feelings or care for such trivial things. The heroine is left pregnant and allow. But, as the father of her baby is a vampire, the heroine is slowly going crazy without his supply of blood to keep her sane. So, her friends and family kidnap the hero and imprison him up in the shed outside. The story was decent enough but I would have liked to see the baby being born before the end. I felt like showing the hero having that connection with his own flesh and blood would have been something special as, though he gets his feelings back and finds love with the heroine, he was still sort of detached and cold sometimes. I honestly didn’t think he was at all interested in rediscovering his emotions and he fought any tidbit of feeling he started to feel emerge. I liked the heroine, her strength and refusal to just lie down and accept her fate. She’s hurt by the hero’s nonchalance and cold cruelty but he’s still the love of her life and father of her unborn child. Imagine having someone you love not love you back and have absolutely no desire to. It was be so painful. ( )

The Review:

I’ve heard a lot of good things about this series. I was a little leery of starting it at book 6, but thankfully, my worries turned out to be unfounded. There was plenty of back story given so that I could understand what had happened previously. I often found myself curious about past events, but I wouldn’t say I was ever confused. Indeed, I found myself thoroughly enjoying the ride the book was taking me on.

Synjon and Petra have a complicated history. From what I can gather, Petra saved Synjon’s life when his mate was killed. Eventually, they end up spending the night together once, which results in Petra’s becoming pregnant. Everything could have been great, except they discovered that Petra’s biological father is Cruen, the man who killed Synjon’s mate. Obviously, this causes some tension. Sworn to revenge, Synjon has his emotions taken away so that he can focus all his energies on his vengeance.

As her pregnancy progresses, Petra finds herself in a bad state. She can’t keep blood down, so neither her nor her baby are getting the sustenance they require. On top of that, she feels like she’s slowly going crazy, suffering severe mood swings. Worried and with no other recourse, Petra’s brothers find Synjon and force him to come with them so that he can provide blood for Petra and his child. Neither Syn nor Petra are thrilled with this plan, but neither can they deny that the blood is helping. So they strike a deal: Synjon will provide Petra with the blood she needs, and then they will both move on once the baby is born. This proves easier said than done, however, as old feelings begin to reignite. Will Syn be able to give up on his need for vengeance in order to be with the woman who’s slowly bringing his emotions back, or will he follow through with his plan to torture and kill Cruen?

One of the best parts of this book is the characters. Every single character comes to life so that they seem like more than just fiction. It’s amazing to watch Syn develop from a man with literally no emotion to one who’s struggling with complicated ones. The entire journey seems incredibly realistic. My one complaint would be that I found it a little jarring when the word “love” started being tossed about. I didn’t feel that Syn and Petra had developed their relationship enough for love to exist; however, there is such incredible chemistry between them that I quickly forgot about my issue and just let myself enjoy the story.

As someone who hasn’t read the previous books, I can say that this is a great story that any reader can pick up and enjoy. My guess would be that those who’ve read the previous books will probably get more out of it just because of their prior knowledge of the characters, but I truly feel that all lovers of paranormal romance will enjoy this book. Indeed, I’m looking forward to going back to book 1 and seeing where this all began. It should be a fun journey!

“Because that’s what he is.”

“No matter what he’s done?”

“Yes.”

“What will you call me, then?”

She froze, her hand deep within the drawer, her wrist covered in denim. For a moment she just stared straight ahead, breathed in and out.

“What will you tell the balas I am?” Syn continued, unemotional but oddly curious.

She didn’t answer him.

“That I’m a cock-up without feeling, but Cruen is a good and worthy parent? Is that what you’re going to say, Petra?”

Finally she released a breath. “I don’t know what I’m going to say. I don’t know what Cruen is. I never got the chance to know.” She glanced over her shoulder at him, her eyes stormy. “But I do know this: I won’t let my child go through anguish and pain.”

“What does that mean?” Syn asked, walking over to the dresser.

She grabbed a pair of jeans and a blue tank, then turned to face him. “The child won’t even know about you, Syn.”

His brows drew together and he looked down, at her swell.

“This balas will have someone else to call Father. Someone who knows how to love. Someone who wants a family, wants…us.”

His breath caught in his lungs and his eyes returned to hers.

“Feeling something now?” she asked softly.
