This latest volume in the Old Testament for Everyone series contains a look at the Second Temple period in Israel as well as the story of Queen Esther, who saved the Jewish people from extermination. In this popular and ambitious series, John Goldingay covers Scripture from Genesis to Malachi and addresses the texts in such a way that even the most challenging passages are explained simply. Perfect for daily devotions, Sunday school preparation, or brief visits with the Bible, the Old Testament for Everyone series is an excellent resource for the modern reader. As part of the "for Everyone" series, the author breaks up the material into sections, providing translations of each, an illustration, and then an attempt to make sense of the text in its context.
I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this volume; then again, since the understanding of post-exilic history is less disputed than pre-exilic history, there's less reason to expect disagreement. Nevertheless, Goldingay does well at capturing the essence of what is going on with Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther and the realities of the condition of the Judahite land, people, and diaspora during the Persian period.
A good commentary.
