If you are looking for a great book at the beginning of the school year, this is it! I used to love weird Al Yankovic when I was growing up, listening to his comedy remix of songs I liked. I couldn't decide which versions I liked better. I love that he is now a children's author. This book includes rhyming, history, things children are interested in like; dinosaurs, outer space, and storytelling. If you like things that lighten the mood for a good laugh, I'm sure this will be a great addition to your library collection. ( )

It was the first day of school when Billy met his brand new teacher, Mr. Booth. The teacher was shocked about the dirt on his shirt and he explains that he was digging in his backyard in the morning and he found a head. The teacher tells him that this is highly unlikely and Billy explains that the best things are. The teacher continues to listen to billy's unlikely tales and his classmates enjoy the highly unlikely tales he is telling. Billy will not admit that his stories are untrue and explains that other great leaders could see things that others do not. As Billy is being sent to the principle a photo slips out that proves that he has been with a two headed cow. The genre of this book is fantasy.

I really enjoyed the book “My New Teacher and Me!” The first reason I thought this was an enjoyable book is because of the rhyming pattern. “The first day of school-it was finally here! I wondered who’d be my new teacher this year…” The rhyming pattern keeps the text fast paced and entertaining. In addition, the absurd stories that the main character comes up with in the story are extremely humorous. He talks about digging a hole to China and finding a dinosaur skull, two-headed cows, and his grandfather flying a kite on the moon. These types of stories are very appealing, especially for young children. Lastly, the illustrations are very appropriate to the mood of the story. One illustration that particularly stood out to me was of the grandfather sitting on the moon, flying a kite, with a whole campsite set up. The illustrator uses very bright, fun colors, and includes so much detail and excitement to each illustration which adds to the fun, silly mood of the story. My favorite line from the story was, “I’ll bet every great thinker and leader we’ve got could see all kinds of things other people could not!” The big idea of the book is for children to use creativity and imagination to look at the world differently. Billy's back and he has a new teacher who learns to embrace a child's imagination and let it grow. There's a great message for parents and kids a like to take away from this and it's delivered in a cute and great way. ( )
