I chose it due to a comment by Augusten Borroughs, a favorite author who raved about it. Jincy is definitely a seasoned storyteller and Amy is likely similar to her since its the tale of a writer gone dormant for years who upon having a minor accident in the backyard spouts new story ideas continuously. Like a line of dominoes, events created by her agent Maxine lead to notoriety and along the way she reminisces about ex-husbands and her life. I'm not sure why Augusten felt it was so funny; compared to his books its not though there are elements of humor throughout. Overall its OK, but nothing to write home about. ( ) adult fiction - humor (after a series of accidents, washed-up writer/hermit has a high-publicity adventure and learns to take down walls between herself and her would-be friends). There are some laugh-out-loud moments here, and a lot of did-she-just-say-that? moments. It's refreshing to hear what a character will say when she truly doesn't care what people think of herself. Other times the story dribbles a bit, but overall it's a fun, flippant read. The main protagonist, Amy Gallup, who at one time in her life was an up and coming author, but due to circumstances, has turned into a hard bitter woman in her fifties. Due to an accident with a birdbath she gives an interview with a journalist that ends up turning her into a media sensation. Amy's former agent gets back in touch and she starts to reluctantly get pulled back into the book industry where she is once again being sought after to write a book. I picked this novel since at first glance it looked like it would be a good read. However in the end I only ended up rating the novel 2.5 stars. The biggest issue I had was that I couldn't root for Amy. She was just an unpleasant character throughout the whole novel and I just had a hard time sympathizing with her at all. In the end I didn't care if she was going to be a success again or not, I just wanted the book to be over. Also the whole novel just goes along in fits and starts and there were so many flashbacks that it got confusing to be reading in one paragraph what Amy is dealing with and then in another what happened twenty years ago. Also you hear allusions to certain events in Amy's past and then you have to keep chugging along and along until you can get to the full story. Instead of feeling satisfied though, I just end up feeling even more irritated. All of the things that Amy went through just seemed so far-fetched and took me out of the story. I know that ultimately Ms. Willet was trying to show how ridiculous the book publishing business is but in the end I just didn't find myself all that enthralled with the character of Amy or anyone else we came to meet in this novel and was just glad to be finished with the novel when it came to the end. I wish I could have enjoyed this novel like so many other reviewers did but I didn't find it funny, smart, or biting in it's humor at all. I would not recommend to other readers. I received this novel for free via the Amazon Vine Program. There were things I liked about this book but so many things I didn't. Found myself constantly questioning if the author of this book wasn't actually doing what Amy was against. Sort of sums up everything I really dislike about the world right now - including my ability to write a review. Opinions are like a**holes - everyone has one but perhaps they shouldn't be exposed for everyone to see. I waffled between giving this 2 or 3 stars, opted for 3 since I did finish though found I was starting to skim at the end. Middle-aged, chubby ex-author falls down and hits her head. Misunderstandings lead to her getting back in the spotlight. On camera or being interviewed, she's perfectly honest, doesn't care what others think about what she says. All this is charming to the media and leads to her getting out of her hermit-like existence. A good read that I could relate to. sin reseñas | añadir una reseña

The endearingly bitter writer, Amy Gallup has happily isolated herself from the world spending the last two decades teaching and reviewing. She has done a lot of thinking, but very little writing. On an unassuming morning, in her slippers, Amy trips in her backyard, goes head-over-heels, and into the side of a birdbath. The hospital clears her of head injury, so Amy returns home. When a local reporter shows up for a scheduled interview, Amy is not quite herself. The article paints Amy as a the zen-goddess of writing, publishing, and life. Her bizarre interview was interpreted as the rambling of a true genius. But all that really happened was: Amy fell down! The next thing she knows, friends and fans are coming out of the woodwork. Suddenly Amy is on radio shows, keynoting a major publishing event, and guiding a local writers' retreat. But the strangest thing of all: Amy starts to write. Readers witness Amy confront her past and present, and choose to take down the walls she so carefully wrote up around her. This novel is a mirror into today's publishing world, a humorous roman-a-clef about a bitterly uninspired writer who decides to change her life after a freak accident.
