This book the perfect pet was a silly book that could really grab the attention the the younger crowd, as in any ages between K-3 grade. Throughout the book Elizabeth really wanted a pet and her goal throughout the book was to convince her parents to get her the perfect pet. However, no pet she could name would convince her parents. So she decided to find her own pet, which in the end became a bug. Her parents at first wanted to kill the bug but once she explained to them that the bug was her pet they let it be okay. I could use this book to teach a lesson in my future classroom by reading this to the students to show them that sometimes the typical pet or 'thing' for one person may not be what is perfect to another person. Also, that even if something is cool to someone it may not be what the other person wants but that is okay to disagree you can always find a middle ground and come to a conclusion on how to do what you both want. Fairly predictable/ safe, but cute. Bruce Whatley's illustrations boosted it up a star for me - a child could spend serious time looking at all the critters' expressions and the people's outfits. ( )

Elizabeth really wants a pet but her parents do not! Instead Elizabeth's parents give her a cactus to take care of and her cactus proves to be a good listener. Elizabeth continues to campaign for a new pet and her family imagines several different possibilities, until the most unusual pet of all comes along. This story of a girl, who just wants a pet is very relate-able to many students. I love reading this story aloud to kids and talking about the different pets they would like to have. ( )

This book was about a young girl who is very eager to get her first pet, but first she needs the approval of her parents. After brainstorming many ideas of different pets to them, she draws a blank when all of her suggestions are rejected by her parents. In the end, she finds a small bug who is perfect because it isn't too loud or messy or hard to care for. Finally her parents agree to having the bug as her pet and she is very happy.
