It's ok for characters to know more about the inner workings of their magic or mojo then you as a reader does, but not just because it's the only way to solve the plot mess you just made. I think if she'd kept it simpler, it could have been great. As it is, I read the first two thirds in 2 days and the last third took me two weeks.
