This is a wonderful book to immerse yourself in learning the customs of Day of the Dead! It follows Daniela, celebrating her first Day of the Dead without her Grandpa. Daniela is a great character for kids to follow, she explains that although Day of the Dead may be seen as sad, it's a celebration, not a mourning. It gives the book a lighthearted feel. An example of this is when she and her mother pick out "funny little skeletons" that play the guitar like her grandfather. The illustrator of the book, Holli Conger did a great job at using bright and fun colors, as well as drawing all the characters happy. They accomplished celebrating the holiday and highlighting the great things Daniela's family does to celebrate their loved ones. The big idea of this book is that Day of the Dead is a great holiday that brings family- whether there daily or not- together. ( ) Daniela is preparing to celebrate Day of the Dead with her family. This is a special Day of the Dead for her and her family because they are honoring the recent passing of her grandfather. In her narrative she tells the reader about all of the holiday's symbols and the significance behind them. She teaches about how the holiday is a celebration of those that have passed on and how it is a happy time. The story also contains little blurbs containing additional facts about the holiday that are not included in the narrative. This book is about the celebrating the life of people who have died. This book would be a good book to read to children to show that death is not only a sad event, but in other cultures it is a happy one.this book also gives information about the history around the United States and Mexico and each page explains the reason for using different things.
Daniela’s family celebrates a very traditional day among some cultures of honoring deceased family members. The Day of the Dead celebration in this book takes place in a family of Mexican heritage living in the United States. The chapters take the readers through the process of planning and celebrating this cultural occasion. Children, parents, and grandparents take part in the story. Illustrations by Holli Conger are bright and cheerful, reflecting the spirit of the celebration. The images have small details that readers will appreciate, such as a painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe and a Mexican flag. Sidebars on most of the pages give facts and other helpful information. This book includes a table of contents, chapters, glossary, index, web-based activities, and a list of related books. These features help older readers learn to use books as tools and will be useful to teachers for classroom activities. Younger readers will enjoy the macaroni skeleton craft idea. Although the topic of death can be scary to children, this book does not have any text or illustrations that are frightening. Recommended for public and school libraries and home, preschool, and day care book shelves.
