If we look for 'speculative thought' in the documents of the ancients, we shall be forced to admit that there is very little indeed in our written records which deserves he name of 'thought' in the struct sense of that term.

In the Penguin/Pelican edition: "Before philosophy" (first published in 1949), the chapter "The Hebrews", by William A. Irwin, had been completely left out.
It took up more than one third of the original text published as "Intellectual Adventure of Ancient Man" by the Chicago University Press in 1946 (and later again, in the Phoenix edition by the same publisher in 1977).
Therefore the question comes up if these two books can still be seen as two editions of the same work. Intellectual Adventure of Modern Man is currently catalogued as a separate work.
