Very mixed feelings about this one. ( )

This book is exactly as hot as the title implies. No, actually, it is hotter. And I don’t mean just the two main characters, Zack and Dante, and how they are ready to tear each other's clothes off and then some each time they have a run-in. No, it is the whole situation they find themselves in with a serial killer, as well as the numerous mistakes Zack makes. An extremely inflammable combination!

Zack is a detective, and he has some very definite ideas about who the serial killer may or may not be. There is nothing wrong with that in principle, except Zack doesn’t use this to lead his investigation into the death of several rent boys. He doesn’t even really look for evidence. Instead he lets his suspicions cloud his judgment which leads to all kinds of issues. Add his gut-wrenching attraction to Dante to the mix, who is - you guessed it - none other than Zack's leading suspect, and you have a huge mess. An infernal mess, in fact.

Dante is a club owner, arrogant, dominant, and doesn’t much care what people think about him. At least, that is what he wants people to think and, for the most part, he succeeds. If it wasn't for his underlying vulnerability, he'd be totally insufferable. He comes close enough as it is! He thinks it’s enough for him to know he is innocent and that, eventually, Zack will see it too. Instead of defending himself, or even just answering Zack’s questions, he believes Zack will see the light and declare him innocent – just because Dante is so obviously not a murderer. Um. Could have fooled me!

If you like your stories on the gritty side and with more than a few twists, if hot men who make mistakes then have to pay for them are your thing, and if the flames of lust tormenting the characters get you inflamed as well, you will probably like this novel. ( )

3.75 stars because:

1. I did have a couple of moments where my belief refused to be suspended and I wondered if Zach could be the stupidest police officer alive.

2. I was disappointed Zach got his job back by claiming homophobia. I would have liked to see him actually man up and accept the consequences of his actions instead of blaming Dante for his own poor decisions.

3. While the imagery the cute ending presented was lovely, it didn't seem to fit with the rest of the story or with Zach's character.

But the sex was HOT and the chemistry between the MCs was amazing! ( )

The main premise of this story is that a closeted gay cop develops a physical attraction to the prime suspect in a murder investigation. While Zack detests the man and wants to see him locked up for the crime, at the same time he lusts after him and jumps at every chance to be near him. The book goes into wonderful detail with the turmoil Zack feels – the lust, the disgust, the jealousy – and how he comes to terms with his closeted status as a police detective.

Dante owns the nightclub where the murders occur and he is connected to each one through sex, making him the prime suspect. He appears cold and unfeeling, showing no emotion when a man he’s had sex with is murdered just hours later. He is an emotionally wounded man, his past eating at him, making him feel worthless and unworthy of being loved. This is such a common feeling for adults of child sexual abuse that I always wonder at the characters who have become strong and invincible, overcoming their past with a blink of the eye and never looking back. I admire Blackwell for giving me a wounded man, one who covers his pain with unemotional one-night stands and a cold-hearted attitude.

There are times, however, when both men act like girls. For the most part they’re just men but every once in a while some estrogen pokes through and someone whines or reaches out and slaps a face. I found that a little annoying. However, I can at least say that these were not macho, testosterone overloaded characters. On the whole, they were average men trying to get through their respective days without messing up too badly. (They kind of fail that one.)

The mystery aspect of the book was very appealing to me. When I read a mystery I don’t tend to think too hard about the suspects. (Did Suspect A do it? No, I bet it was Suspect B!) I’d rather not put the clues together in my head but instead just enjoy the book for what it is – an interesting mystery that gets solved by the end of the book. And this mystery was solved quite satisfactorily – no red herrings and no last minute suspects thrown in. I found Inferno an entertaining book.

Favorite Quote: With no pockets he’d had no choice but to accompany y the ensemble with a gold bag for his keys, his money and his makeup. Now he knew how women felt; it was tiresome.
