Tommy is the new boy, not only in school, but in America. Tommy and his family just moved from Israel, and Tommy thinks that English is really hard to learn, so he speaks quietly and not very often. The teacher is always asking him to speak up and the children are always teasing him, so Tommy just stops talking. One day, a police officer came into their classroom with his police dog. The dog was barking and very excited, but the police officer couldn't get him to stop. Tommy tells the dog to be quiet in Hebrew and the dog listened. The police officer then told Tommy that the dog was trained in Israel, but he didn't know any of the Hebrew commands. He offers to help Tommy with his English if Tommy will help him with his Hebrew.

Tommy has just moved to America from Israel and has a very thick accent and is struggling to learn English. Kids tease him about the difficulty he has. One day, the teacher invites a police officer to come in and talk to the class about his job. The police officer brings his trained dog with him. The police officer can't get the dog to settle down though. Tommy commands the dog to sit in Hebrew and the dog listens. The police officer is amazed and explains that the dog was trained in Hebrew but that he doesn't know now to speak Hebrew so he can't train him. He tells Tommy that if he helps him learn Hebrew, he will help him learn English. Tommy feels confident and proud and his classmates gain a newfound respect for him. Appropriate for ages 4-7.
