Lynn Sherr was a competent narrator. Listening to the book, I joyfully headed to the pool. Swimming has held a special place in my heart since my youth. My appreciation of the sport was enhanced thanks to the presentation of swim-related facts and its cultural impact. ( )

This sits on my bedside table again. It's been there before. I've placed it on the shelves, but when it came time to do some soul searching for Casey's confirmation quote, I pulled it from the shelf and set it on the bedside table once more. We decided to go with a bible quote about water. Casey is as much a water baby as I am and reading through this book once more, I'm struck by how Lynn Sherr gets it. She understands me in ways most will never be able to, because of her relationship to water. Every once in awhile I pick it up and leaf through and read a paragraph or chapter. When I can't be in the water, it's the next best thing. ( )

Excellent book about the history of swimming. Lynn Sherr also talks about swimming the Dardanelles. Very interesting. ( )

I kept smiling when I learned about the science of swimming, the history of marathon swims, the history of bathing suits, and how people including Oliver Sacks, prepare for a big swimming event. As a swimmer myself, I couldn't be more delighted to have this account of how Lynn Sherr joined Lord Byron and many others in swimming the Hellespont, but there is so much more. This book also has great reference value. Its bibliography includes books both fiction and nonfiction about swimming. ( )
