Andrew 'Ender' Wiggin is only 6 years old. His peers bully him, his parents are aloof and his older brother is violently resentful of him. He might also be humanity's only hope. Ender is recruited to join the International Fleet's legion of child warriors in training, to report for duty in defence of the planet. His promise is high and his teachers are sure he will rise to the test-that is, if Battle School doesn't kill him first. “Does it ever seem to you that these boys aren’t children? Look at what they do, the way they talk, and they don’t seem like little kids.”(no page numbers)

Earth has faced its greatest challenge in two wars against an insect-like alien race called the Formics. In anticipation of a third conflict with this species, Earth’s International Fleet is looking to train the best and brightest in hopes of saving the planet. This epic science fiction military story of Andrew ‘Ender’ Wiggin has been adapted to the genre and follows him from his selection and training as a soldier at the IF Battle School to his leadership evolution at Command School. He is believed to be Earth’s greatest asset in defeating the alien ‘buggers’…but he’s only a child. I loved this story in its novel form and I was very excited when I saw this graphic novel. The storylines have been condensed and features more of the action sequences. The illustrations took a little getting used to, however the stylistic approach has some appeal and the flavor of the story is preserved. I would recommend this to young adult readers because of mature themes, but with an impending film version due for release and children are the stars, it may develop a broader appeal. The novel is excellent and the graphic novel would be a terrific complementary piece for both avid and reluctant readers. ( )
