I ended up reading it online, because my local libraries don't have it in print. I'm in love with this series -- an excellent, grumpy, pragmatic protagonist, wierd adventures, interesting side characters and fantastic art. Vernon has a gift for creating an engaging story. I feel so involved with the characters that they are constantly having other adventures in the back of my head, as I wait eagerly for the next installment. ( )

Seriously endearing. This story of a dead God and a lost wombat is beautiful, amusing and very touching.

Digger (of Unnecessarily Complex Tunnels), our stalwart heroine, steals the show, as a very down to earth, very funny and caring wombat who doesn't usually hold with Gods but is dragged into an adventure through a bit of devious magic. She is an utterly fab character who’s attitude makes it a sheer joy to spend time and bounces off an excellent supporting cast from warrior Hyenas, an orphan demon, Buddhist monks and some seriously cute trolls.

The black & white art is perfect & quickly grows more confident too. I don't need to mention that dialogue is spot on but I have neglected to say the plot is great and there is some lovely world building too (love those wombat curses).

I discovered her art maybe a decade ago, then discovered after my move this year that I now live in the same small North Carolina town as her. She just won the Hugo. I live in the same town as a Hugo Award!

Digger ist... wunderbar.

Und ein Wombat. Und überaus bodenständig, was man von einer grabenden Spezies nicht anders erwarten sollte, aber trotzdem. Ich will gar nichts zur Handlung verraten, aber es gibt Geister und Kämpfe, Banditen und Kinder, orakelnde Nacktschnecken und geflügelte Ratten.
Die geschaffene Welt ist einfach wunderbar bezaubernd und steht dabei der Handlung in nichts nach.

Der Comic selbst ist schwarz-weiß, mit einem starken Kontrast und keinen Graustufen (von Sprechblasen mal abgesehen). ( )
