I read this book about 8 years ago now. I read it the first time as I had read the authors account of her son's journey with the mental illness Schizophrenia (Tell me I'm Here). It was very touching and perceptive and well written. This book is also all of those things. More than being just about resilience though, it is a memoir of her later life, and an account of the death of a friend.

The author appears to have done everything and achieved so much in her life. Yet, she doesn't brag about her obvious intellectual prowess. She has a strong sense of social justice and has worked in various roles that allowed her to explore these themes as well as to be part of the solution. This book is really a philosophical musing on life, its difficulty, and on how it is that people overcome huge odds and adversity. ( )

Anne Deveson has authority to write about resilience more than most. An uplifting book. ( )
