The Toff goes to bat for an innocent man being hunted by the police and a gang of killers. ( ) John Creasey is the inventor of a few gentleman adventurers among whom the Toff is one of the best. Kill the Toff is either number 22 or 23 in the list of books in the series and shows a man comfortable with his role in society and his ability to find out the truth. Judith Lorne is upset, her fiance, James Mellor is accused of horrific murder and other nefarious dealings in the London underworld. She finds this very difficult to believe. The Toff has been asked to find James Mellor as he is the heir to Sir Frederick Arden's estate as Arden's only son is dead. Also thrown into the mix is Clarissa Arden, Sir Arden's niece, who is conviced that James Mellor is evil incarnate. Who is right and who is wrong? An amusing read and I had pretty much figured out the twist, which is possibly the fault of having read it or many others like it over the years.
