Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:

The extraordinary life story of one of the most beloved writers in the world, including his courageous battle with Alzheimers

With worldwide sales of more than 65 million copies in 37 languages, Terry Pratchett's novels are eagerly awaited by his legions of fans year after year. Featuring an in-depth look at the man and his work, as well as on-screen adaptations and a collector's guide, this is essential reading for any fan. His first Discworld novel, The Colour of Magic, was released in 1983 and ever since then the series, with its whimsical heroes and fiendish foes, has delighted both young and old alike. In 2007 Pratchett announced that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He has courageously faced the disease head-on, equaling the determination of his characters in his vivid and satirical novels. This book examines his extraordinary life, showcased against the backdrop of more than 40 years of irreverent artistic achievements. For devoted fans it features appendices of more than 60 pages listing Pratchett's works on screen and at the theatre, a complete UK bibliography and collector's guide, and a note about cats.

This book was so-so. The blurb states "featuring an in-depth look at the man and his work, as well as on-screen adaptations and a collector's guide, this is essential reading for any fan". However, I found this book does not really discuss Terry Pratchett or his life. So it's not much of a biography. Cabell selects a few of Terry Pratchett's books and does a brief analysis on them, but it reads more like a college paper than an "in-depth look at the man and his works". The collector's guide section is a list of almost everything type of adaptation and book Terry Pratchet wrote/ was involved in. Something you can probably find on his website. If you want to know more about Terry Pratchet, then I recommend reading the authors own words which is supplied in A Slip of the Keyboard: the Collected Nonfiction. ( )

[Terry Pratchett: The Spirit of Fantasy] by [[Craig Cabell]] is not so much a biography of Pratchett's life but a biography of his writing development, especially in terms of themes and imagination, and how his diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer's disease in 2007 led to strong activism both for research on the disease and for assisted-death legislation as well as stimulating themes in his writing. Cabell is a journalist who apparently makes a living writing about authors. I don't know that I got any great insights into either Sir Pterry or his writing, but Cabell does include an exhaustive bibliography of book editions (British) and movies at the end. ( )

This book explores the evolution of Terry Pratchett's books and stories, often comparing them with other works of fantasy, however, the rather dry presentation leaves me cold, even if I am now better informed.

Don't expect any humour outside of some excerpts from TP's Discworld series, however, do expect almost relentless and pedantic analysis of how and why the stories developed.
