Not one of Eldridge’s better books. He tries to walk a fine line between criticizing organized religion, which he says hurts developing a relationship with Jesus. But he often implies that many of the traditions of faith including worship services, music type or other facets are of the “religionist” variety and impair Christians, rather as acting as tools/catalysts for many Christians to strengthen their faith. This book often appears contradictory in his message.

The printed study guide can add some to group discussions – but his free online video sessions are nothing more than him sitting in a room with an audience while he reads portions of his book. There is no interaction from the small group in the room with him other than some laughter at some of his comments. He does not engage in any conversations or discussions with those present in the room; that method for some of his other books adds immensely to their content. The sessions appear to be nothing more than what you would find at an author reading at your local bookstore that has no audience participation. It almost looks like Eldridge did not want to have a conversation because he likely could not explain some of the contradictory commentary that might result.

While the book does present some material for discussion, I would not recommend it. The small group that I participated in reading and discussing the group unanimously agrees with my comments on the confusing presentations in the book. ( )

This 18 part series is an excellent way to study the personality of Christ Jesus. Eldredge does this in a personal way that is very enjoyable for those involved. This would be an excellent DVD study for a small group at your church or for individuals in your home. I would recommend the book to read along with the study, though it is not required it will enhance the study as it will cause each individual to personally contemplate the chapter being studied prior to the lesson presentation.

I love that John Eldredge explores the multi-faceted character of Jesus in a way that opens the individuals eyes to the richness of his Character. This series will cause people to see that Jesus was not an always smiling, cookie cutter Rabi, but a Savior filled with intensity, passion, love and humor - A Savior driven by the spirit to reach the wayward of this world, love the hurting, mend the broken and bring chastisement to the arrogantly proud rebellious of the time - as well as of this time.

Wonderful DVD curriculum. ( )

Offering a pleasingly different insight into the character of Christianity, John Eldredge’s Beautiful Outlaw invites readers to see a different side Jesus—in fact, a different side in each chapter. The author offers intriguingly human images, backed up with Biblical passages read, not as conventional theory, but as real life. The character that emerges is neither an ethereal squeaky-clean vision with glowing halo, nor a fiercely threatening lawyer, but rather a God who cares, listens, takes action, angers, loves… shown by an author who invites readers to find the words, and break through the gloom of “religious fog.”

Author John Eldredge offers many examples from real life, other writers, and the Bible, making Beautiful Outlaw a fascinating read, as well as a challenging one. Multiple themes thread together, and even if you struggle to relate to one, another will catch your attention. When life’s profusion and fun invite the author to see God’s humor in creation, I find myself reading ahead to learn of Jesus’ “disruptive honesty.” Humility, truth and love might be easily recognized in Jesus’ life, but “cunning,” “scandal,” “playfulness”? Together the chapters weave a picture of a Christ who is more, far more, than the image in worship songs or the helpless babe grown up to bland sacrifice.

Beautiful Outlaw is an intriguing book, a great basis for a Sunday school series, and an enjoyably challenging insight into the Christian faith.

Disclosure: It was a great basis for a Sunday school series at our church. ( )

Are you tired of the religious fog? “Christianese“? Legalism? Then you’ll really enjoy this book!

Mr. Eldredge gives us a fresh perspective on the personality of Jesus. Instead of distant and spiteful, Jesus has a sense of humor, and is generous, humble, witty, gentle, and yet fiercely intentional.

I really enjoyed this book! They say that you can’t love Jesus unless you know Him. And, I think this book does a good job of introducing you to the real Jesus… the Jesus that came to us as a baby, and lived 30+ years here on earth to show us who He is.
