Wilson Williams is a second grade boy who loves his hamster, but he has a large problem pertaining to school. Wilson hates math, avoids it, and is struggling with fractions. On top of that, his parents have decided to hire a math tutor to help him. This realistic fiction is appropriate for intermediate readers; kids will relate to Wilson as he struggles to hide his secret of having a tutor and trying to learn about fractions. ( )

I read this book to a group of fifth grades and they were not really interested. The book mentioned an important message. I think many children feel that having a tutor is not cool. I thought this was an excellent, but it should be read to the lower grades. ( )

This short novel has a lesson in math and social issues. Along with a relationship between 2 brothers. The main focus was the little boys problem in not being able to understand fractions. So, his mother hires a tutor for him. The tutor successfully helps him learn his fractions by incorporating his favorite thing in the lesson, his hamster. ( )

Everyone has something they need to work extra hard at to learn. For some it's spelling, for others it's science, and for third grader Wilson Williams, it's math. Oh, and not just any math...FRACTIONS! Luckily (or unluckily depending on how you look at it) Wilson's parents hire a math tutor to help out.

As Wilson tries to keep his struggles and the tutor a secret, his friendship with his best friend, Josh, begins to suffer. As Wilson learns about fractions, he is reminded of the importance of friends and family along the way.

The Bottom Line: This quick read is for everyone who has ever struggled to learn something. The themes of family, friendship, and overcoming challenges make this book a winner for kids in grades 2 - 4. Highly recommended for both kids and parents.
