This book's subject is fascinating and the details are well-researched. However, the pony's narration is jarring --- it sometimes seems that he must be widely read and yet he also can't recognize a thermometer. Moreover, the sentimentality expressed by the men is just a little weird and hard to believe as is the pony's devotion to his handler.
