It's the story of Janet and Sallie Lee. They grew up together, Janet was even best friends with Salli's younger sister at one time. The time before Janet's entire life got thrown into the trash compactor and Janet wound up in jail. Salli's life also had ups and downs, though they weren't as crazy as Janet's. Both women wind up back in Pennington and the story goes from there.
It was an intense book. The subjects, including prisons, and assault and such don't lend themselves to flowers, candy, and singing and and dancing (though the hymn that the title is based on is one of my favorite and used in the book too). But, the author approached the intensity of the novel with a light hand and the humor in the book came out perfectly, lightening the mood of scenes without being inappropriate to the topic of the novel.
It was on the whole a good book, but while some of the sections were brilliantly written. Here and there was a section that was unwieldy and too long, or alternatively seemed more like they were the skeleton of a scene instead of a fully fleshed out one. I think the best way to put it is that some sections were just a bit uneven.
Still, I don't read Lesbian romance fiction for groundbreaking story lines or narrative structures (though sometimes the lesbian romance fiction I read does include those things), but for the descent into another world. In this book the world of the southern diner and that part of the book was very well written. And I read it for the relationships, friendships, and character interactions, and for the most part those were top notch in this book as well. (
