This is the follow-up to the massively successful Lent for Everyone: Luke Year C, bringing Lent reading to a new audience. The book gently takes the reader through the designated Lectionary readings for every day of Lent and Easter. The Bible readings are Tom Wright's own clear and accessible translations from Matthew for Everyone (SPCK, 2002). Each passage is followed by a freshly written reflection and a prayer that will help readers to ponder the relevance of Matthew's Gospel for their own lives. Suitable for both individual and group study and reflection, Tom Wright's Lent book will allow readers to make Matthew their own, thoughtfully and prayerfully. It will help to make the journey through Lent a period of rich discovery and growth.… (más)

I downloaded this study guide/devotional for Lent for my Kindle as I wanted something lightweight for travelling. It focuses on Matthew's Gospel, with commentary taking us from the beginning right through the passion stories. Sundays - other than Easter Day itself - take a look at some of the Psalms.

The Bible sections in focus are included as part of the book, making it easy to read without having to find other texts; however there were recommendations of longer passages to read, which was simple enough to do with the Bibles I have, also on my Kindle.

Tom Wright's style of commentary is well-written, relevant, with plenty of anecdotes and some helpful suggestions. I read a passage each day from Ash Wednesday, right through Lent - and was then pleased to discover that the book did not in fact stop on Easter Saturday, but continued for another week.

One of the best devotional/low-key study guides I've read. Could be done any year, as there are no actual dates, just days related to the Lenten/Easter period. Definitely recommended. ( )

Lent for Everyone is a compilation of meditations/commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew. N.T. Wright, who is a well respected theologian and scholar of Paul's writings, has stepped out of his strictly scholarly role to produce a very accessible guide to scriptural readings for the season of Lent. Readings from the Gospel of Matthew are followed by short commentaries on the selection. Each of the commentaries is thematically linked to Jesus' passion, death, and resurrection. Wright provides cultural and historical background to the biblical events and feasts referenced in the readings to enhance the reader's understanding and appreciation of the passage being considered.

Sundays, which have traditionally not been counted as days of Lent, are celebrated with a commentary on one of the Psalms. The psalms provide an emotional and psychological break from the increased foreboding that builds within the structure of the readings.

Wright designed the book so that a reader, studying one meditation every day of Lent and each day of Easter week, will have read the whole Gospel of Matthew by the end of the Lenten/Easter season. Experiencing Lent for Everyone as N.T. Wright designed it, provides the reader with a guide to entering into the Lenten season deliberately and appreciatively. Lent for Everyone is enthusiastically recommended for the "everyone" mentioned in the title. ( )
