The authors provide a richly detailed account of the social and economic history of the Ottoman region, from the origins of the Empire around 1300 to the eve of its destruction during World War One. The breadth of range and the fullness of coverage make these two volumes essential for an understanding of contemporary developments in both the Middle East and the post-Soviet Balkan world. The text of volume one is by Halil Inalcik, covering the period 1300-1600. The second volume, written by Suraiya Faroqhi, Bruce McGowan, Donald Quataert and Sevket Pamuk, continues the story to 1914. Το μείζον αυτό ιστορικό έργο έχει αναγνωριστεί ως σημείο καμπής στη μελέτη μιας από τις πιο σημαντικές και μακρόβιες αυτοκρατορίες των νεότερων χρόνων. Πέντε διακεκριμένοι μελετητές αφιέρωσαν δέκα χρόνια σ αυτό το συλλογικό εγχείρημα, που ξεπερνάει τις χίλιες σελίδες, με έναν φιλόδοξο στόχο: να παρουσιάσουν σφαιρικά όσο και διεξοδικά την κοινωνική και οικονομική ιστορία των οθωμανικών περιοχών, από τις απαρχές της αυτοκρατορίας, γύρω στο 1300, μέχρι τις παραμονές της κατάρρευσής της κατά τον Α΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.

Το κείμενο αυτού του πρώτου τόμου, που υπογράφεται από τον Χαλίλ Ιναλτζίκ, καλύπτει τους τρεις πρώτους αιώνες. Ο δεύτερος τόμος, γραμμένος από τη Σουράγια Φαρόκι, τον Μπρους ΜακΓκόουαν, τον Ντόναλντ Κουάτερτ και τον Σεβκέτ Παμούκ, παρακολουθεί τη συνέχεια μέχρι το 1914. Κάθε τόμος διερευνά τις εξελίξεις στη δημογραφία, το εμπόριο, τις μεταφορές, τη βιοτεχνία, τη γαιοκτησία και την οικονομία, αναδεικνύοντας τις δομές και τις αλλαγές, τις κρίσεις και τις μεταρρυθμίσεις, που καθόρισαν την πορεία της αυτοκρατορίας. Τα εκτενή συνοδευτικά υλικά (χάρτες, πίνακες, κατάλογοι, χρονολόγια, γλωσσάρια, βιβλιογραφίες και ευρετήρια) συμβάλλουν στην ολοκλήρωση της εικόνας και υποδεικνύουν κατευθύνσεις περαιτέρω μελέτης.

Χάρη στο εύρος και την πληρότητα των αναλύσεών του, το βιβλίο αυτό είναι απαραίτητο για κάθε ερευνητή του οθωμανικού παρελθόντος, αλλά και πολύτιμο για όποιον ενδιαφέρεται να κατανοήσει τις σύγχρονες εξελίξεις στη Μέση Ανατολή και στα Βαλκάνια.
