Jaine Austen is looking forward to an indulgent spa getaway until she learns it is more about deprivation than relaxation. Between minuscule meals and a deadly brush with fame, surviving this vacation will be no piece of cake. When Jaine's friend Lance surprises her with a trip to The Haven, an uber-luxe health spa on the California coast, she and her feline pal Prozac are eager to hit the road and bask in a week of pampering and pedicures. But upon their arrival, she discovers that this oasis in the hills is merely a fat farm in disguise, complete with celery juice cocktails, humiliating weigh-ins, and a zero-tolerance position on carbs. And as she gets to know her fellow inmates, she realizes 300-calorie dinners are not the craziest thing she will be dealing with. Among her bulge battling companions is Mallory Francis, a B-list movie star with a knack for making frenemies with everyone she meets. When she is found strangled during a seaweed wrap gone awry, Jaine is hard-pressed to think of anyone who could not have done it. Perhaps it was Kendra, Mallory's bitter sister and personal assistant. Or maybe Clint, a macho former co-star whose dirtiest secret is in danger of being undressed in the drama queen's upcoming memoir. Or was it The Havens' pretty young masseuse, driven to commit a crime of passion when Mallory seduced her aerobics instructor husband Sven? With the suspects mounting faster than her hunger pangs, Jaine doesn't know who to believe. And when her search for truth, justice and contraband calories leads her straight to the cold-blooded killer, it seems murder may be on the menu once again.… (más)

Jaine and her cat Prozac are off to a relaxation spa as a treat, courtesy of her neighbor, Lance. Unfortunately, when she gets there she discovers it’s a forced diet spa. Diets are so not Jaine’s thing. Worse, they force Prozac on a diet, too. I’ll admit, I was sooo hungry reading this book with the descriptions of how they were starving the program participants and Jaine completely unable to find nourishment, so fair warning, read this book with a hearty plate of carbs in hand. This being a murder mystery, someone at the resort turns up dead of course, and Jaine has to figure out who the killer is because the police will not allow anyone to leave the premises until they’ve cleared them as suspects. Meanwhile the reader just continues getting hungrier… This also had a fun subplot with her parents involving their emails, a HOA, and garden gnomes. ( )

Jaine gets a free spa (aka diet) vaca courtesy of her neighbor who neglects to tell her what it really is about. She takes Prozac which is a big mistake. Nothing is what it seems of course. Jaine ends up involved in solving a murder mystery and falling for a cute guy at the convenience store nearby. ( )

Cute book--first I have read of this series--very light. Love the imperfect main character. Nice light read. ( )

This is my least favorite Jaine Austen book. I think it is because of the stereotypical cast of characters. The only person I like was the deli guy and the cat. How the climax came about seems a bit too convenient in this book. ( )

A half decent mystery book - there are so many, much worse ones - Pampered To Death scores in the humor department. The you've got mail chapters are a hoot, but then Laura Levine was in cahoots with someone (she mentioned that in her foreword) to chip in with the jokes. I did anticipate the unveiling of the murderer, but it was glaringly easy and I can't be proud of that epiphany. This book was the shortest of the first ten, for which I'm grateful, as the it was all meat and no filler. Shame that the meat was not of prime quality. Gotta go now lambchop( I must say it, the caps lock gag were laugh out loud funny), I'm feeling peckish. ( )
