If you do simple crafts at story time, this is great book to share. After you read it, you can give the kids colored squares and let them see what they can make with them! ( )

The perfect square is not so cut and dry. When square is knocked down, he finds a new way to transform. What I love about this book is the many messages that one can take away from it. This book shows the imagination and creativity that one can have in math and geometry. It also has the deeper meaning showing that one never stops evolving and that even when you are down and the odds seem against you, you have the power to choose to turn it around and find the good. Perfect Square is a beautifully colorful picture book that takes readers on a adventure through shapes and how they change. One perfect square changes again and again into a new shape every time. On Monday, the square had holes poked in it and was cut into pieces, and it became a fountain. On Tuesday, the square was torn into scraps, and it became a garden. On Wednesday the square turned itself into a park. This is a book that provides readers with a visual experience and it promotes both creativity and math specifically geometry. ( )

Perfect Square shows how happiness is a choice. When Perfect Square was torn into pieces, crumpled, and punched with holes, he chose to transform himself and be something new, and happy. The theme of this book is: no matter what challenges we face, we should choose to overcome those challenges with a smile on our faces. We should make happiness a habit. This book can also be used to teach kids how to think outside the square. ( )
