History. Nonfiction. HTML:

Collected in one volume, here are backfires and blunders that collapsed empires, crashed economies, and altered the course of the world.

From the Maginot Line to the Cuban Missile Crisis, history is filled with bad moves and not-so-bright ideas that snowballed into disasters and unintended consequences.

This engrossing book looks at one hundred such tipping points. Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. The Caliphs of Baghdad spend themselves into bankruptcy. The Aztecs greet the Conquistadors with open arms. Mexico invites the Americans to Texasâ??and the Americans never leave.

Cem exemplos de más decisões, equívocos e meros acasos que mudaram o rumo da História, da antiguidade até aos nossos dias. A importância de conhecer os erros do passado para evitar que os mesmos se repitam. ( )

Started OK, especially since I was reading this as a bathroom book; but the longer I read, the more predictable his writing became; the closer the topics came to the present, the more annoyingly predictable.

Not worth the effort. ( )

Interesting, introduced me to some new battles I wasn't aware of, but HUGE problems.
- Not well written - very elementary, yet awkward+confusing grammar at times
- Gave way too much emphasis on single cause in some cases
- Very quick to consider something a serious mistake of stupidity or pride, even when it was a simple mistake of ignorance that we only see with 20/20 hindsight
- Most significantly, outright historically wrong on some parts. Sometimes this was an aside to his main points - e.g. timeline of American Revolution vs British India and African colonies, or claiming Iran/Iraq war was longest of 20th century
- However, at least one case it was central to his argument - that is, reversing order of Winter War and Molotov-Ribbentrop pact

Overall still a fun throw-away read, but not a good pop history or what-if book. ( )
