Marzano has always had a fascination with vocabulary building and often speaks about it in major presentations. Probably a decade ago, he built a major list of vocabulary words that kids at various ages should learn. In this co-authored volume, various kinds of games are presented with sets of vocabulary words for upper elementary students and advanced students. The games have directions, the words, and the answers. Our question is why aren’t these computer games that might attract a player? One plus is that the words for the various games are associated with social studies or math or other topic. It is probably worth the price of the book to see how the games are constructed, but the best idea is to draw words from what is being read and studied at the moment when there is a context and a reason to build understanding. It is the same idea as just in time info lit skills as opposed to skills taught in isolation. Krashen would tells us that those who have the best vocabulary are those who read and read and read. As the Common Core Standards are implemented, more informational texts and complex texts will require more challenging vocabulary. Context, context, context. And, perhaps Web 2.0 tools could come to the rescue with kids building their own vocab banks. Hmm… wonder if anyone has done this…
