Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:

An absorbing chronicle of a much overlooked chapter in Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' life??her nineteen-year editorial career

History remembers Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as the consummate first lady, the nation's tragic widow, the tycoon's wife, and, of course, the quintessential embodiment of elegance. Her biographers, however, skip over an equally important stage in her life: her nearly twenty-year-long career as a book editor. Jackie as Editor, written by one of the authors Jackie edited, is the first book to focus exclusively on this remarkable woman's editorial career.

At the age of forty-six, one of the most famous women in the world went to work for the first time in twenty-two years. Greg Lawrence, who had three of his books edited by Jackie, draws from interviews with more than 120 of her former collaborators and acquaintances in the publishing world to examine one of the twentieth century's most enduring subjects of fascination through a new angle: her previously untouted skill in the career she chose. Over the last third of her life, Jackie would master a new industry, weather a very public professional scandal, and shepherd over a hundred books through the increasingly corporate halls of Viking and Doubleday. Away from the public eye, Jackie quietly defined life on her own terms. Jackie as Editor gives intimate new insights into the life of a complex and enigmatic woman who found fulfillment through her creative career during book publishing's legendary golden age.… (más)

I'm one of those annoying and cliched old women who loved Jacqueline Kennedy, although I'm embarrassed to admit it. And so I loved this book, which is interesting without being (very) vulgar. I'm glad I read it. Every 50 pages or so, I'd have to add something to the old Amazon wish list, but sadly, most of the books she edited are out of print and therefore out of my price range. ( )

Kindle edition is 7.59; borrowed from library. Found the book inspirational. It was tedious reading since it was a recitation of all her projects without much story line. However, I found it great that she found a career for herself and was able to take her talents and use them productively. ( )

Although the front flap of the book jacket of "Jackie as Editor" claims that this is “the first book to focus exclusively on this remarkable women’s editorial career,” the book appeared on the market approximately one month after "Reading Jackie" by William Kuhn, covering the same topic, became available.
As the title suggests, "Jackie as Editor" deals almost exclusively about her life as an editor. Other events during the last 19 years of Jackie’s life including her family life are seldom mentioned until her final illness which is discussed in some detail.

"Jackie as Editor" tells the stories of Jackie’s involvement with the authors, illustrators, and editors of the books she participated in having published. It also describes how Jackie went about coming up with ideas for books which should be published. Author Greg Lawrence interviewed a large number of people associated with Jackie during her time as editor in preparing to write this book. The book is written in an informal style, with numerous quotations. Many of the authors Jackie worked with talk about their interactions with her concerning their books. Mr. Lawrence himself assisted dancer Gelsey Kirkland, his wife at the time, in writing three books which Jackie edited. Although the sources of quotations are suggested, Mr. Lawrence does not provide any footnotes; in the sources section near the end of the book, he lists the people interviewed (without dates of interviews), and books and periodicals he used for each chapter, but gives no citations.
