It is the twilight of mankind. Depleted by generations of war with a race of dark beasts, humanity stands on the brink of extinction. The outlands are soaked with the blood of the fallen. The midlands are rotting with decadence and despair. Elfkind, estranged by past crimes, watches and waits for nature to run its course. And then the two collide. Ayden's life has long been guided by two emotions: love for his sister, and hatred of all things human. When he's captured in battle, he is enslaved in the service of a human prince, Freyrik Farr. Freyrik's always known elves to be beautiful and dangerous, but never has one affected him as deeply as Ayden. Teetering on a dagger's edge between duty and high treason, Freyrik discovers that some choices can change a life, and some an entire world. Between prejudice, politics, pride, and survival, Ayden and Freyrik must carve a new path, no matter how daunting. For nothing less than the fate of both their peoples rests on the power of their perseverance--and their love.… (más)

Many people will tell you that you can't choose who you fall in love with. And sometimes that is a distressing reality. As Ayden finds when he leaves his elven brethren and enters service of Freyrik, a human prince. Not only must they contend with the long history of enmity between their two races, but Ayden's strong will is something he hopes will be enough to fight off any feelings of attraction that he senses are creeping up. But strong will can translate to passion and close proximity to someone who takes your breath away is bound to break down a wall eventually. The question is what to do once it comes crashing down. For Ayden and Freyrik, that's not an easy question to answer. ( )

My thoughts right now?

I wish Ayden didn't help humans during the Surge. Better let them perish and use that chance to escape.

Not a single likable human character, including a spineless Prince of Farr, who can't even stand up to a representative of an apparently extremely opprest member of the society - a woman, The First Wife. Neither can he properly defend his property or people he is in charge of. Even children are little savages.

Elli is no better, a clueless child in La-la land. She needs a serious reality check in the form of flogging post next to her brother's. Maybe then she would start taking reality for what it is.

This society is too messed up as it is and House of Farr lets it slide even further. It's motto: "People get what people want, dammit! And people want it now!"

Maybe, maybe Lord Lini and young Ekkja are still somewhat redeemable. But the former is only a servant who would do anything for his master and the latter is ...dead.

There is no hope in this book, by the middle of it you know to abandon any and all.

Ayden is the only likable character and only because of him I am giving this book more than one star.

I wanted to write more, but Yvonne said it all in her review. I can sign under every single word.

Anywho... There is some good news. I found Ayden :D

What an amazing book! Fantasy is not my favourite genre and yet I was immediately captured and held spellbound! The characters are so well developed, the plot interesting, and the pacing perfectly suited to the scene - from slow and unhurried to racing at breakneck speed! I didn't much care for the cliffie but it's not a big deal as I already have the sequel in my hot little hands!

While I did find this reasonably enjoyable, some parts were hard going. It had an interesting premise and the tension in the characters romance was nice, but some of the world building was not as well developed as I would have liked. However, something a little different and worth a nosey. 3 and a 1/2 stars. ( )

I rarely find a fantasy romance book that has an in depth culture description, plot, and great sex. They usually are mutually exclusive.

This had the nail biting tension of the Sword of Truth series, but the added bonus of a passionate romance. Not to mention it is a male/male romance.

If you like male/male and fantasy, then you need to pick this up.

One note, this book ends abruptly, so be prepared to jump right into the second one. ( )

For my dear friend and editor Tal Valante,
who let me play in her sexy, sexy sandbox.
I found treasure buried there.

And also a dead parrot.

But mostly treasure.

If you wedge me between two tall cliffs, I would hang a portrait on each and call them home. If you wedge Ayden, he would spend the next thousand years carving a stairway with his blade, one grain of stone at a time, until he could call himself free.
Yet men... you strive to shape the earth in your image, forgetting that the gods have already shaped it in theirs.
All the world seemed suddenly a dream, for in what waking world would a prince deceive his own people for the benefit of a slave?
Ayden's eyes snapped up and narrowed to slits. "This is a collar," he said flatly.

"Nay!" Freyrik said. "Tis..."

"A neck belt, perhaps? To hold my shirt up?"

"A cravat," Freyrik said firmly. "Very fashionable, I assure you."

He felt the elf's stare on his throat, unyielding as a choking hand. "Yet you do not wear one."
The answering silence spoke volumes, though Ayden could not interpret its language.
