After sixteen months of travelling round the Mediterranean in search of the ancient secrets of the olive tree, Carol returns to her beloved olive farm in the south of France, to her husband Michel and his burgeoning family. However, the homecoming celebrations are overshadowed by disturbing discoveries. The plight of the honey bee has become an international crisis and Carol is faced with unsettling news about the hives on her own olive farm. The bee colony that has regularly wintered at Carol's farm has been decimated while she was away, poisoned by insecticides. While the multinational companies are pushing for 'bigger, better, bumper' crops, a small band of farmers and ecologists are calling for a halt to many of the modern farming malpractices that are endangering the planet. Carol is amongst them. But it puts her own farm, her idyll, under threat. At what point do you turn your back on all that you believe in and all that you have been fighting for? This is the story of how Carol and Michel struggle with some difficult choices, and how they decide to deal with the unavoidable disappointments and inevitable responsibilities that come with running an organic farm. Return to the Olive Farm is a song of the earth. With its lyricism, humanity and humour, Return to the Olive farm is a beautifully written book that passionately confronts the issues of today; issues that impact upon each and everyone of us.… (más)

What do you do when the bees suddenly die, and you find out the pesticides that are being sprayed on your olives to protect them from fly blight is the cause?
Carol Drinkwater has documented the setting up of a successful olive farm in previous books. In this one she describes a journey in setting up an organic farm. Along the way she has to deal with family members, the neighbours, the bureaucrats, other olive grower, and the trusted employee. Its a tussle between head and heart - but she uses both because they do not have to be mutually exclusive.
Well worth reading if you've read her previous books; and also if he need encouragement and instruction if you want to follow a similar path. ( )

This book is the first of Carol Drinkwater's that I've read. I really like this sort of book and must admit to having looked at her other books several times but never bought them. I will be rectifying this mistake soon. She is a very good writer.
There is a lovely feel to this book and it has some wonderful imagery in it. You can build up a very clear picture of what Carol and Michel are seeing and doing which adds greatly to the books appeal. The journey that they have been on both physically and mentally is well described and you almost feel like you've been on it with them.
This was a perfect book for lazy sunny days in the garden. The descriptions of France and their way of life bought something of a holiday feel to the book. It was very enjoyable. ( )
