Science Fiction. Young Adult Fiction. HTML:

Introducing the first young adult novel from crime fiction writer Adrian McKintyâ??whose adult books have been called "unputdownable" (Washington Post), "exceptional" (San Francisco Chronicle), and "profoundly satisfying" (Booklist)â??this is the start of an epic sci-fi trilogy with an unforgettable hero.

When Jamie's mother inherits a small island and moves her little family from Harlem to Ireland, her troubled son sees a chance to start over, far away from the bullies and the pitying stares. Cancer has left Jamie without an arm or the will to speak. But Muck Island is no sanctuary, and it offers more than solitude and sea views. Jamie learns that he is heir to an ancient titleâ??Laird of Muck, Guardian of the Passageâ??and certain otherworldly responsibilities. With the help of a mysterious object he discovers in the island's old lighthouse, Jamie sets out on a dangerous interstellar mission that could change the course of his lifeâ??and the universeâ??forever.

Tautly paced and brilliantly imagined, this novel will thrill sci-fi fans eager for new heroes and new world… (más)

I thought it was ok, but it could have used another edit. ( )

A book similar to my favorite series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and almost just as good. If you loved Percy Jackson, you'll love Jamie O'Neil. ( )

Jamie O'Neill is many things -- he's an only child, an amputee, a cancer survivor, a transplanted New Yorker, and most recently, Laird o' the Muck. When Jamie and his mother inherit a small island (Muck) just off the coast of Ireland, they leave a dismal, hand to mouth existence in New York City for a much brighter future. A new friend -- one who doesn't care that Jamie doesn't talk and has only one arm -- and a real house with a roof that doesn't leak are nothing to be sneezed at. But the real prize in Jamie's new life turns out to be the old lighthouse on the island. There's something very strange about it. Could the old myths about travel to a strange land be true?

The first of a planned trilogy, McGinty has crafted a tight, well-conceived tale with plenty of high adventure, but with serious undertones. Volume one ends a bit abruptly, but if the second volume is close to hand, it shouldn't put readers off too much. ( )

When Jack O'Neil's mom inherits an island in Ireland, Jack and his friend Ramsey discover a Salmon, which transports them to Alden, where they meet Wishaway, a girl waiting for them to save the Aldenese from the invading Alkhavans. The two boys have no clue how they can help but are determined to try. Book 2 is called The Lighthouse War. ( )
