I've never laughed so much out loud while reading a novel except maybe when reading a P. G. Wodehouse book. We return to 44 Scotland Street. Pat has overcome her infatuation for flatmate and conceited egotist Bruce and she continues to work for Matthew at his private art gallery. Bruce has decided to go into the wine trade and sponges off a friend. 6 year old Bertie continues his battle with pushy mother Irene and spends some time with his father Stuart. Dominica, an anthropologist, has a lot to discuss with either Pat or her friend Angus (accompanied by his eccentric dog Cyril).

I enjoyed this more than the first book, probably because I was a bit more familiar with the concept and the characters and knew what to expect.

Bertie's parts are still my favourite, and it was nice to see things get better for him. I also liked seeing Bruce fuck up, although of course he was a smug ass by the end still. Oh well, you can't get everything.

I didn't really like Matthey in this though: I found him sympathetic in the first book, but this hatred of Janis in this one was a bit too much. And Pat suddenly wanting him when he was rich? Plz...

You could tell McCall Smith didn't plan on writing more in this series (he even says it in the foreword), so it'll be interesting to see what happens in book three, but I'm sure he'll make it work. I've seen other series going on for longer than expected with good results, I've no reason to doubt that this will. (

This was a difficult book to put down. Its daily format encourages that, of course, but even so, it was a joy to read. Its characters are engaging, helping the reader to laugh, cry and a few times even cringe in agony.

Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit and look forward to the next. (

I enjoy this series, but this one started dragging a bit in some parts, especially during the Ramsey Dunbarton Story. Either I missed the point or it was really boring. Since his wife kept falling asleep while he was reading part of it to her, I suspect it's not just me.

There was a guest appearance in this book - Ian Rankin, author of the Inspector Rebus series. This was a bit of a surprise; I've read the first few books of that series.

There was some really good humor, but a lot of boring stuff too. It's nice for a change, but I don't think I'll keep reading right away. It seems to have reached a point where things are changing a lot, and a lot of characters are planning to go away, so it may be a good stopping point. (
