It's Fancy Nancy's mother's birthday, and our resourceful heroine is determined to give her a day of pampering at their back-yard Ooh-la-la Beauty Spa. From face masks to manicures, pedicures to hair-styling, this is a full-service spa, including special treats and entertainment. But when something goes wrong with her mother's hair, has Fancy Nancy ruined her big night out at a fancy restaurant...?

The third of these smaller Fancy Nancy picture-books I have read - the first two being Fancy Nancy: Explorer Extraordinaire! and Fancy Nancy: Poet Extraordinaire! - Fancy Nancy: Ooh La La! It's Beauty Day is one I approached with trepidation (a "fancy" word for fear, as Nancy herself would say). It just seemed overly girly, in a self-indulgent way that I find the other books about this character are not. Perhaps I was simply misled by the idea of a "beauty day," but in the end I found this one adorable, and appreciated the warmhearted nature of Nancy's efforts for her mother. It reminded me of similar gifts I gave my mother as a little girl, including "coupons" for the performance of various tasks, and special services. The artwork is every bit as cute as ever, and recipes and suggestions are included, so readers can try to beauty services that Nancy is performing, in their own homes. Recommended to Fancy Nancy fans. ( )

This series never disappoints. In this book I love how the illustrator drew out the things she’ll need for her spa day so you can visualize them rather than just read them. It’s super helpful and engaging students. One of my other favorite pages was when the fan was spread out and you see a bunch of nail polishes and written by each finger is the color of the nail polish. The author and illustrator work so well together. Having Nancy work on her mom for the spa was also so fun because this is really what kids do. This is something little girls will relate to and enjoy. ( )

This was a precious book about a cute little girl and her mother. Nancy wants to do something really special for her mom's birthday. So, she decides to plan a whole spa day for her mom in the backyard. Not only does she provide a spa for her mother, she also provides entertainment. I loved this book, and I especially loved how there were tips inside the book on how to throw the perfect spa day. For example, there is a yogurt parfait recipe inside the book. This probably has something to do with why it is realistic fiction, since the author shows you how to make a perfect spa day! ( )

This was a very sweet book about a little girl and her sister and how they give their mom a spa day. Nancy wants her mother to have a very fancy spa day before her date with Nancy’s father, so she and her assistant (her little sister) prepare a little beauty parlor in their backyard. Nancy believes that everything fancy is French, so she uses French words like Bonjour and Merci throughout the spa treatment. The book is really cute because as Nancy is doing all of these beauty tactics for her mother, there are side notes on the pages on how to do some of the treatments. Nancy also tells the reader the definitions of words that she thinks the reader may not know. I think kids would really enjoy this book because Nancy is such a fun character. The pictures are engaging and colorful, and the side notes are a great touch. I also think this book gives a teacher the opportunity to have a mini social studies lesson. One can you this book to reference and expand her students’ knowledge on the French language and country itself. ( )

Fancy Nancy opens up her own beauty salon in her backyard. Nancy decides to treat her mom to a spa day, but it doesn’t go as planned. With the help from her neighbor, Nancy avoids a disaster and her mom is ready for her birthday date. This is a good book to teach about hard work and asking for help. ( )
