Located within the Cindy Klassen Recreation Complex at 999 Sargent Avenue. All areas are wheelchair accessible. The 6,000 square foot facility offers the West End community significant improvements and amenities. Information including slideshows of the new library available online.
History & Location
The original West End Library, 823 Ellice Avenue, was officially opened on October 14, 1966 by Mayor Stephen Juba. It served as a bookmobile depot as well as a public library. A new 6,000 sq. ft. West End Library opened on February 20, 2009, with almost double the size of the old facility.
On July 31, 2018, West End Library was renamed Harvey Smith Library in honour of late City Councillor Harvey Smith. The longtime West End resident, who died in March, 2017, spent 22 years as a city councillor.
Collections & Circulation
Harvey Smith Library has a diverse collection of both Adult and Children's fiction and non-fiction. The collection appeals to and reflects the needs of the multi-ethnic culture in the West End area. Constant movers are mysteries, cookbooks, crafts, do-it-yourself and picture books. The library has a large collection of Adult, Young Adult, and Children's paperbacks. Circulation at West End Library was approximately 78,000 per year.
The library currently circulates over 114,000 items annually and offers approximately 140 programs each year.
Harvey Smith Library provides free public access to the Internet and Library databases.
Photocopying and printing is available for a fee. Scanning to email is free.
Harvey Smith library has a SAD light therapy lamp for use onsite, year round.

Facilities
Harvey SMith Library holds storytime in the program room adjacent to the Circulation counter. Harvey Smith Library also features an ongoing book sale. There are tables throughout the building for study and reading.
Battery Recycling is available in all branches of Winnipeg Public Library. Look for the Call2Recycle box and dispose your batteries using the bags provided.
