The Witches of St. Petersburg
Daughters of the impoverished King of Montenegro, Militza and Stana leave their humble but beloved home for St. Petersburg to be married into senior positions in the court of the last Tsar. The sisters are initially shunned for their provincial ways and foreign appearance. But Militza is determined to make a better life for her and her sister. Each carrying a knack for the occult, the sisters heighten their skills and fall in with the lonely and depressed Tsarina Alexandra who is willing to try anything to precipitate the birth of a son and heir. If she puts her faith in them, the sisters promise the Tsarina they can help her produce a boy. The girls hold seances, experiment with a variety of rituals and introduce a series of spiritual men to the Tsarina. Their quest for an heir takes time, but their closeness to the royal famiy and power in court is undisputed: until, that is, Rasputin arrives on the scene. Militza and Stana are intoxicated, but in helping bring Rasputin into their lives, have they taken a fatal step too far?
