This was a very simplistic, yet very informative, overview of Napoleon's greatest battles, his exile to Elba, and his eventual escape. It did not cover the Battle of Waterloo. Somebody gave me a set of 10 Charles Rivers books on various historical topics and they are a good, quick overview. Although only 35 pages, I ended up purchasing 3 other books from topics glossed over in which I was interested. A few fun factoids:

Pre-Elba-Napoleon had trouble subduing the guerillas (first time this term used) in Spain. He was a good battle strategist for conventional armies, but could not read or anticipate the guerillas.

US Civil War--Battle of Bull Run--used one of Napoleon's battle strategies (not successful)

Others considered Napoleon such a good strategist that when his hat was observed on the battlefield it was said to be "worth 50,000 soliders."

But this approach is more of an archeological and sociological perspective, with ghost stories and legends sprinkled throughout some Indian and a little California history--and yet, even at that, most characters and events got fairly brief mention--as a listener, I felt like a little stone skipping across history and was put in mind of a speel one might hear during a tour, perhaps of Death Valley. But still, the narration by Jim D. Johnston was done well, and I'm glad I listened to it. I probably know a little more than I did before I listened.… (más)

About a species (not a word I concur with or would use) of man, related to the Neanderthals. They found 5 skeletons in a cave in Russia in 2008. However, Neanderthals and homo sapiens also used this cave, so I'm not sure what good DNA analysis may be. I am not learned enough to argue anything on these prehistoric topics, except the dates used by anthropologists or paleontologists are not what is usually used by historians. Quite frankly.....I'm bored with this type of book that argues dates and dates and dates! Sadly, I'm just not interested enough to do any research myself. 49 pages… (más)

Nice, tight summary of the case--I learned a lot from it.
