A quick look at 18 dog breeds. Each entry is narrated by a dog of that breed, and it goes for a lively tone but falls a little short, so it still just feels like reading an encyclopedia. Each dog goes through the same points, so it gets very repetitive and is probably best read in little doses.

To encourage childhood journaling this book of colorful, lined pages has writing prompts throughout as well as pictures of dogs on each page making little jokes or sharing dog breed trivia. There's not much to it, obviously, but it did get my daughter to print out her thoughts a few times around the age of ten.

The book is narrated by an annoying spoiled princess -- a Pekingese dog -- who shares how to be an arrogant snob at school. There's a half-hearted attempt to make her less awful at the end as she condescends to make friends and influence people . . . through bribery and flattery.

Um, no.

I actually liked the first half of the book as we meet a timid and anxious Pug who is taken to an obedience training class to help him get over his reluctance to face the scary world. He is immediately terrified of a pit bull he meets there but slowly learns to see past stereotypes to find that appearance doesn't dictate who might be a friend and who might be a bully.

Unfortunately, the hijinks around a final obstacle course competition are just too cheesy and groan inducing for me to tolerate.… (más)
