I truly liked this book. I, like Gabby, am frightened of horses. They are magnificent creatures, but it was stated so well, that mankind has often enforced a savage dominance over the horse and for that he should apologize. I have so often thought the very same. To think of what horses have done for us over time, plowed and harvested our fields, moved possessions and even died in our wars. Ram, Wyatt's father, was a sort of a burly old man, but could be very likeable. We saw this when he took Trevor, Gabby's son, under his wing when he joined the New Beginnings Program at the Blaine ranch. It held my interest in what was always happening at the ranch. I almost felt that I was there at the ranch. Each character in the story fit their part. To be able to forgive someone who had been driving drunk and killed your wife and son was remarkable.
I received this book through early reviewers and very much enjoyed this read. I thought it was fantastic. The characters and plot were enough to keep me turning page to page to page. It is alot like Nicolas Sparks books, but enjoyable to find a new writer. This book will find your emotions reeling and maybe even shed a few tears with a happy ending!
Wyatt Blaine's happy world crumbles on his 35th birthday when his wife and his son are killed by a drunk driver. Five years later, Wyatt still hasn't recovered from their deaths, and Trevor MacPherson--the 14-year-old son of the man who killed Wyatt's family--is having problems at school and is offered one last chance: participate in the New Beginnings horse therapy program on the Blaine ranch. Gee, what in the world do you suppose will happen here? If you’ve ever watched a Hallmark Movie, you already know.
Barclay’s romance novel is saved from utter sicky-sweetness by underlying plot lines dealing with the hero’s father – a still-powerful man facing the decline of his mental powers – and one centering on the widow’s troubled adolescent son. Along the way, secrets are revealed and tears are shed on the way to the foreordained happy ending.
The writing is pedestrian, the two main characters are essentially one-dimensional, and the Florida setting seems to have been chosen because – hey, you gotta set it somewhere, and besides, that’s where Barclay lives.
Unless you’re a fan of formulaic non-chick-lit romance, this one is about two notches above a Desperation Read. ( )
