The stories we tell are not limited to monsters and harsh otherworlds. Yet the fiction books in the Borealis imprint certainly belong to a world other than our own. This line encompasses our science fiction, fantasy and horror novels and anthologies.

I was mesmerized into reading yet another vampire/vampire slayer story. It must be that bat flitting around the balcony. Sonja Blue is a cranky punky nasty girl vampire, out to crack some nightmare skulls. Lots of fetishy scenes, but a bit too violent for my taste. The oppressiveness of the idea that the world is actually more mean and evil than it seems bummed me out a little too. One book has been done as a comic book, that I haven't looked at yet. I'll see how my stomach's feeling before I do. (February 11, 2004) ( )

The first book in this series was a fantastic vacation read. I didn't realize when I bought it that this is technically horror, but it proved worthwhile. The nasty scary bits aren't so bad, and the violence is very gruesome, though mostly it's against rapists and murderers, so you end up not feeling that bad for them. The rape scene is super unnecessarily explicit and I did not appreciate that.

I'm currently on the last chapter of the second book. I've certainly enjoyed it, but it's not as good as the first. I think my love of Sonja Blue in the first book is what's carried me through this one, though it is a pretty good read. The dialogue isn't as good and the grotesque monsters have definitely worn off any horror that shocked you throughout the first book. There are, as with the first book, some minor sexist and racist views/comments of some characters which, depending on your gender and race, may be hard to overlook. ( )

Raped, fed on and left for dead. She doesn't die but becomes a walking hybrid with no remorse set out for revenge. Human, demon, monster, once she sets her sights on one, it's over. No glitter vampires here just predator and prey.... preys. Worth the purchase and the read, more than once.

This book is exactly as it seems - which is to say - it is dark, violent, at times uncomfortable, and is perfect read when you are looking for something a bit more macabre...

The writing is tight, the first three volumes makes a fully complete story, with an interesting ending. The characters are flawed, but interestingly so, at times, it is almost too dark. The vampires are not sparkly, the creatures of the night inhuman. Its a bit refreshing to read after much of the paranormal urban fantasy that is out there.

This book isn't for everyone - it has rape, torture, and horrific violence. ( )

I have worn out one copy already (damn that glued binding!). How many times have I read this? 8? 10? Never gets old. There's something about Collins' writing here that always draws me back to the story. Blue's character is fascinating, and Collins really tells some good stories. A perfect book to read when you're feeling like giving a sharp smile to someone.
