This is the book, or at least one of the books, I should have read before tackling Parker's better known The Army of Flanders and the Spanish Road - a concise narrative history of the revolt (or rather revolts) of the Netherlands to the truce of 1609. Nice, compact overview, treating the underlying political and social issues as well as the history of the military campaigns. Makes it clear that there was a lot more going on than a simple matter of Catholics vs. Protestants, but it does also give a strong impression that the author's sympathies lie mostly with the Catholic side.
Brings clarity and thorough scholarship to these complex events. It is a fine blend of descriptive and analytical history. Performs the near miracle of giving a portrait and an explanation of a large and long event of immense complexity and enormous importance in only 330 pages.
Based on Spanish and Dutch documents from archive and private collections from all over Europe, The Dutch Revolt takes into account religions and economic, as well as political, factors, demonstrating the intricate links that tied the fate of the Netherlands to that of Spain, in a age when particularism was more potent that patriotism.
