As always with questions of structure, readers may be divided on how well, and how quickly, Warren gets us to care about this disparate group. For my part, once I was on that merry-go-round, the book demanded reading. Atmospherically, Cool Water is unforgettable. It captures a world of yard-lights and night owls (real ones), poplars and buffalo stones. It might be dreary, but the prose is animated with the skill of a writer who loves the people for their stubborn persistence. Small towns are the breeding grounds for characters like this, foibles and all. PremiosListas de sobresalientes
Dianne Warren has crafted seven exquisite stories, each of them a near novella in scope and character. Warren's ear for the colloquial was honed during years of creating pitch-perfect dialogue for the stage, and her cast of hapless singles is as familiar as our most intimate friends. As her men and women wander from suburb to small town, serendipity wreaks havoc with their too-comfortable lives. Prank calls, stealthy neighbours and harmless thefts slowly whittle reality into brutal focus, and each character confronts a life irrevocably altered. Here is a world of casual violations, surprising fits of protest and small accidents with enormous repercussions. No se han encontrado descripciones de biblioteca. |
